Lee "Scratch" Perry was more than just a producer—he was a sonic alchemist, a pioneer who reshaped the soundscape of reggae and dub music forever. Born in Jamaica in 1936, Perry's influence can still be felt across genres from hip-hop to electronic music. He was the mad genius behind the mixing board, known for his experimental production techniques, mystical persona, and the legendary Black Ark Studio, where he created otherworldly sounds using tape loops, reverb, and a whole lot of intuition.

Perry worked with icons like Bob Marley and the Wailers, Junior Murvin, The Congos, and Max Romeo, often pushing artists into new, uncharted territory. His work wasn't just about rhythm—it was about atmosphere, about conjuring a vibe that felt spiritual and raw all at once. Tracks like “Police and Thieves” or “Chase the Devil” carry his unmistakable fingerprints: heavy basslines, swirling effects, and a sense that the music itself is alive.

Even as he grew more eccentric with age—sporting flamboyant outfits and speaking in riddles—Perry never stopped innovating. His legacy isn’t just in the records he made, but in the freedom he embodied: to be weird, to be bold, and to turn sound into magic. Rest in power, Scratch.

Today’s lunchtime listening: DOS - Justamente Tres (1996)

Somewhat melancholy album from the bass duo of Kira Roessler (Black Flag) and Mike Watt (Minutemen, fIREHOSE). 

Half instrumentals and the other half feature vocals by Kira. Watt even slips in a few lines. 

Fans of fIREHOSE will recognize a few riffs here and there but don’t expect the same energy.

Dungen – Ta Det Lugnt (2004) is a psychedelic masterpiece that exploded out of Sweden and into the hearts of music lovers worldwide, like a long-lost treasure from the '60s that somehow time-warped into the new millennium. Blending swirling guitar solos, jazzy drumming, dreamy Mellotron textures, and Swedish lyrics delivered with raw emotional intensity, this album is a kaleidoscope of sound—both heavy and delicate, structured and totally free.

At the heart of it all is Gustav Ejstes, the multi-instrumentalist mastermind who wrote, produced, and performed most of the album. Tracks like "Panda" and "Festival" hit with a wild, garage-rock energy, while moments like "Du e för fin för mig" drift into lush, melodic beauty. The whole thing feels like a ride—sometimes speeding through fuzz-drenched psych jams, sometimes floating in folky introspection, always deeply immersive.
